Sheeps on the Reef
     From mid-February to mid-May the lowcountry artificial reefs hold some monstrous Sheepshead. During this time of year the larger fish move to the reefs for a good food supply, slightly warmer waters and to spawn. Raising fish in the 6 to 12-pound range is quite common over the reefs this time of year. For the most part gearing up for these fish is quite similar in many ways as inshore with a few exceptions. Provided herein are a few pointers to assist getting on these larger fish.

NOAA Fisheries Service Requests Comments on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for South Atlantic Snapper Grouper Amendment 17A
Comment Period Ends April 19, 2010

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries Service) is seeking public comment on a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for Amendment 17A, which addresses overfishing of red snapper in the South Atlantic.

Actions contained within the DEIS include:

  • Annual catch limits (ACLs) and accountability measures for South Atlantic red snapper;

  • A rebuilding plan for red snapper;

  • An area closure intended to end overfishing of red snapper (Note: at their March 2010 meeting, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council changed the preferred closure alternative from Alternative 4D to Alternative 3C) ;

  • A requirement for circle hooks in the snappergrouper fishery north of 28° latitude; and

  • A requirement for a program to monitor red snapper.

The Final Word

     Man is spring finally on the way? I stepped outside yesterday morning without a coat on for the first time in months! I fished the Folly on Saturday morning on the incoming tide with no luck. I was stopped by a couple of DNR agents that are friends of mine for a license check the same morning. They had checked about a dozen boats by the time they made it to me, said they had only seen one fish all morning, a Red caught while slow trolling grubs. Good friend of mine fished some docks on Sunday in the Folly with cut mullet and picked up several fish over the slot limit before the wind picked up in the afternoon. Looks like the reports elsewhere are strong on the Reds though. Fish are still reported as being very lethargic as water temps are in the low to mid fifties, but are still hitting spoons and grubs. There are also some great reports on Sheepshead and Black Sea Bass at the reefs and the big Shad run is getting cranked up.
     Offshore reports are a little slim, but the talk continues to be over the Wahoo and some Blackfin Tuna. Excellent reports off of North Carolina right now. .

Tight lines…
