Broad
River Cobia
Late April and May mark cobia time in the Beaufort
area. Each year anglers from all over the state converge on the
broad river to see if they can tangle with one of these brutes. This
past weekend we headed down to try our luck. This was our first trip
to the broad river and after an unsuccessful trip I’ve spoken with
several people that caught fish and compiled a few things that may
increase the likelihood of catching one.

DNR to stock 25,000
American shad
The SC Department of Natural Resources is stocking
approximately 25,000
marked American shad fry in the Broad River on Tuesday, May 6th with
a
majority of the stocking occurring upstream of the Columbia fishway.
The
stocking effort marks the beginning of a much larger scale
restoration effort
to stock millions of American shad fry per year in the Broad and
Santee River
systems. The shad fishery is the single most important finfish
industry in
South Carolina, but overfishing and spawning habitat degradation has
taken its
toll on the fishery. Through restoration efforts, the SC Department
of
Natural Resources (DNR) hopes to revive the recreational fishery for
American
shad.
Restoration efforts beginning May 6th include a pilot
study to evaluate
production methods within the Jack D. Bayless Fish Hatchery in West
Columbia.
This will assist hatchery staff in meeting the
large-scale goals of the
overall restoration endeavor in upcoming years.
At this time, hatchery staff is already in preparation for meeting
next year's
production targets. Find out more about the Bayless Hatchery
here:
American shad are the largest members of the Clupeidae
family, which includes herring, sardines and menhaden. American shad come upstream
from brackish waters to spawn in the early spring. In South Carolina this
spawning season starts as early as January due to water temperatures, peaking
in February and March, and ending in April. Due to the rapidly
increasing temperatures of the South Carolina river systems during the spawning
season, adults tend to move much further upstream then American shad in more
northern river systems. As a result, further than 10 per cent of adults
survive their spawning migration to spawn again. Find out more about shad
here:
Every spring the American shad migration gives rise to
the South Carolina recreational fishery that occurs exclusively in freshwater
during their spawning migration. Tens of thousands of anglers land American
shad with their dip nets and artificial lures. Continual restoration
efforts, like the one kicked off May 6th will allow licensed anglers the continual
enjoyment this unique inland fishery.
DNR Courtesy Boating
Inspections Set During Memorial Day Weekwnd
In an effort to keep state waterways safe during the
upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Law
Enforcement Division will again be conducting courtesy safety
inspections at some public boat landings.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend is considered the first blast of
summer and one of the busiest weekends of the year on state waters.
DNR boating safety and enforcement officers will perform a quick,
but thorough, inspection for items such as required safety equipment and
proper boat and motor registration. "Those who are not in compliance with
safety regulations or registration requirements will not be ticketed during
the
complimentary inspections," said Col. Alvin Taylor, deputy director
of the
S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Law Enforcement Division.
"Instead,
they will be given an opportunity to correct the problem before they
launch
their boat." DNR officers will also be available to answer questions
and give
boaters tips on how to stay safe on the water.
To report boating violations such as reckless operation or an
intoxicated boat operator, call the DNR toll-free, 24-hour hotline
at 1-800-922-5431. For a copy of South Carolina's boating regulations, to
find out
about local boating safety courses or to obtain a free float plan
form contact the DNR Boating Safety Office at 1-800-277-4301 or
visit the DNR Web site

The Final Word |
This
offshore fishing this past week was tough due to high winds.
Saturday some boats made it out and had some good catches of
fish. Plenty of dolphin and blackfin tuna were caught along
with some really nice wahoo. Inshore the trout fishing is
really going strong as are the redfish. Last week provided
some nice tailing tides and the fish are hungry. The
top-water bite is turning back on as the weather and water
warm up. Flounder fishing is getting more consistent using
live mudminnows. It looks like we will begin to get back
into some more stable weather heading into next week, but as
usual weather in our area cannot accurately be predicted out
more than a couple of days at a time.
Tight
lines…
