Sat May 14 Late Post

Headed out just after daylight to check some cans in the channel for cobia. The ocean was already pretty choppy but we headed out anyway. We didn’t find any cobia but we did find a few people with no concept of personal space, which is a pain in the ass when you are in rough water. We decided to head to one of the reefs and fish to get away from the crowd. A couple boats were on the reef when we approached so we anchored up on a piece a good ways from anyone. We dropped a couple rigs with squid and a couple with quartered crab. The ringtails just shredded the crab so we switched to whole mullet. The squid was catching constant black sea bass of all sizes, sometimes two at a time. Somewhere in the midst of the BSB I caught a couple of nice sized triggerfish. Then, the clicker on one of my TLD 15s began to scream. I set it to strike, reeled, and the line tightened. Line began to spool off my reel steadily. I thought at first that the anchor had broken loose and I was hung on the bottom as the boat drifted. I double checked the GPS and we were still at anchor. Line continued to be stripped from my reel. I told my buddy to pull the other lines because we were going to have to give chase to whatever this was because I wasn’t even slowing it down. He hurridly began making ready for our departure. The spooling stopped as the fish turned back towards us. I began reeling like a madman to keep the line tight. It then cut hard to the right and started running away again, stripping line twice as fast as before. I pushed the lever as far forward as it would go but line continued to peel off. I tried using my finger tips and palm to slow my spool but this just resulted in a friction burn. As my friend got the last line in my rod suddenly straightened. I reeled for a few minutes, retrieving the three quarters or more of my line that had been stripped off. Whatever it was had cut me off. Probably a large shark. I was just left to wonder the rest of the day what it could have been. I re-rigged and re-baited but the only thing to

nice bluefish. seems like quite a few of those are around lately

That second fish is a nice blue fish, good eating, that’s what got your frist spool burn. a 20+lb blue are strong and toothie, common around here, semper fi!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Thanks, I’ll definitely check out the recipe. I have never eaten trigger before. They are waiting in the fridge for me! When I go back to the reef I’ll be more heavily armed. Probably with my TLD 25s with braid attached to steel. After my cut-off I switched to wire kingfish rigs. The blue hit one of those rigs with a whole 7" mullet on it.

bluefish have very nasty teeth and very very very powerful jaws. they can take a finger with no problem. seen it happend on head boats in jersey. stick your thumb in there and kiss it goodbye.

Caught this one in the surf on IOP last year with a buddy right past the breakers on whole mullet…

They are here, just hard to reach, plus noone targets them because some people consider them trash fish.

triggers are just about my favorite fish to eat. Not hard to clean either like a lot of people claim…
