Hey guys, I was wondering if we could get a small group to fish the nearshore reef in June. It’s approximately 5.5 miles from the shoreline. That being said anyone interested needs to be relatively fit and we’ll equipped for offshore fishing. I have been fishing about 2 miles out by myself but would feel safer at the 5 mile mark with some friends. Feel free to comment on days suggestions or gear recommendations.

I thought about doing this, but from what I’ve gathered by talking to a few reef fishing guys is that there are mostly BSB at the Nearshore Reef. You can catch bigger and better fish much closer - at the jetties, for example. I’d hate to go all the way out there for a zillion black sea bass…
I agree with Louis, the jetties would be a much better option for catching larger fish without fighting through as many BSB. But I’m up for the paddle out there to give it a try(the jetties I mean)

I’ve been to the nearshore in a small boat and it’s loaded with 10-12" BSB’s. Not much else. The jetty’s are a much better option. I would recommend having someone with a motor boat join the group as a safety precaution.
Yep, everyone one I have talked to said the nearshore reef was thick with sea bass. I caught one about 10 years ago on a charter , the “Thunder Star”, they make great table fare. It will be interesting to see if they open the season back up on them this year.

I’m mot prepared, and in no way comfortable to fish bog water like that. But if I were tall of definitely rather fish the jetties than the Sullivans reef, especially in a yak! Plenty of great fish at Tue jetties
I don’t live there full time until next spring or we could use my boat as an escort vessle. Easy enough to raft onto if the weather came up and carry you all back to the hil
