Making lures on a 3D printer?

Anyone here using a 3D printer? I was wondering if the material in these printers is affordable enough to justify making your own lures— I could imagine a good number of hard plastic baits that could be made on them.

I have no experience whatsoever with them, but this came up in a conversation earlier today, I was trying to find an excuse for our shop owner to buy one. We already have a $$$ CNC router, so might as well get a nerd printer to go with it.

“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza

Let us know if it works out. I imagine if you can make a gun using a 3D printer, a fishing lure would be no sweat.

“Nerd Printer” I like that.

Reason 4,382 for me to get a ‘Nerd Printer.’
The material is cheap, its just a spool of plastic, not unlike weed eater line. The hard part is the design, at least for me it would be. If you are serious about it, find a 3D Printer forum and see if you can get someone to print one for you.

I know a bunch of 3d modelers/graphics gurus that would gladly provide design in trade for some custom one off lures…

There will be a TON of stuff being made this way down the road when a more durable medium can be used.

I can already see all the Copyright Infringement cases that will come down the pipe on this one tho. IMO.

Really sucks for someone that worked their ass off as an entrepreneur and get their stuff stolen.

In no way am I saying you are involved in this or ever will be but it will happen I think.

Just a thought,

Yep, a 3d printer and some jigskins and you could make anything you want.

-and you know what they say about opinions-

you should use the 3d printer to make the mold, and then use resin/mold release to make the lure. 3d printing material that i have seen on the hobby scale is pretty maleable and would not hold up to much abuse fishing and banging around (if you are talking about offshore lures). Caveat- i have not seen any really high end extruders, so there may be some that would make a more durable lure. Also, when you think about manufacturing, the 3d printers around are not too fast per unit, but if you made a mold, you could make multiple units at a time…
