Hey guys, I?m new to the forum/fishing/boating and need some last minute help. My family is coming down Saturday for a week on Daufuskie. We are bringing our own boat (21? Carolina Skiff DLV 115hp) that we just got?first boat = still learning. The plan is to put in at the Pinckney Island Landing and run over to a dock right by Freeport Marina that we have permission to use for the week?super excited to say the least.

A few of questions:

Is the Pickney Landing a good safe spot to put in and out? We?ve only been able to practice 4 other times to prepare and hope to not to see crazy lines of inpatient experts, strong winds, strong currents; really anything that will throw us off the routine we?ve practiced to safely get the boat, kid, dog, wife, and gear on the water.

Assuming Pickney Landing is the recommendation, how long do you think it will take us to run to Freeport Marina?

Now fast forward, we have friends staying in Shelter Cove. We would like to pick them up and go to dinner at Skullcreek Boathouse one night. Can I cut through between Bram Point and Buck Island to enter and leave Broad Creek?

We are also planning to pickup my parents at the Alljoy Landing in Bluffton at some point. From Freeport Marina, can I cut through Bull Island on Bull Creek or do I need to go all the way around Bull Island via the May River?

Finally, my 3-year old would love to see us catch a fish. I?m not ready this year for getting out early, catching bait, and anchoring in front of Harbour Town. I?m not set up to troll yet. And not ready for any rough water with this crew. I?ve got a medium weight rod and a 3-year old with a short attention span. Any recommendations for some no fuss fishing would go a long way toward getting him hooked (no pun intended) on fishing and justify my purchase of the boat?as it seems the success of this vacation will largely determine.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, no problem. Well marked channel.

I would hesitate to leave a vehicle at any ramp for a vacation sort of time period. A marina who would launch you by forklift or hoist would be a better option. Skull Creek Marina can do that and your vehicle will be safe, as can others. Or consider leaving from Savannah. Bahia Blue or Savannah Bend Marinas in Thunderbolt can drop you in the water and keep your truck safe for a week. Daufuskie is an easy 45 minutes from Savannah, Intracoastal waterway all the way. About the same distance from Pinkney Island.

At high tide yes, but don’t even try it at low or on a falling tide, go around if you don’t know the waters. If you get stuck on an incoming tide you will soon float off. If you get stuck on an outgoing tide you might be stuck there 8 hours, and your family will not be impressed.

If your dock by Freeport Marina has lights on it, just sit on the dock at night and cast live shrimp around the dock lights. Even if it doesn’t have lights you will catch something pretty quick. One of the best nights trout fishing I ever had was sitting on the Daufuskie community dock and pitching live shrimp. I think 3 of us caught over 400 fish. Released them all but a bucket full we gave to a local. I love Daufuskie, or what it used to be. Also the mouth of Mungen Creek is usually good, and the inlet at Bloody Point is almost guaranteed sharks and whiting this time of year. Same with the beach front. You can also catch plenty of crabs and shrimp in any of the smaller creeks for bait, for supper, or to justify your new boat. Which needs no justification anyway

Be sure to stay on Buck Island side of the cut through. Observe the Daufuskie Ferry routes and follow them.

Also, If you launch at Pickney Landing, depending on the tide stage, you could see some pretty swift current.

Thanks guys, we followed your advice and launched in Savannah. We absolutely LOVED the ride into Daufuskie. Thanks again

You can stay inside of buck island and then you don’t have to worry about the shallow channel at the point. Only problem is that area is a no wake zone al the way down buck island (although I feel like I am the only one that ever observes it). Also like many have said be careful at low tide when using that cut through if you aren’t familiar with it. Best to mark the trail the first time at no wake speed. Also be careful on the opposite end of buck island. That flat is really large and you can run out of water there before you know it as well. Good luck and have a great trip.

I spent the night on that one, once [:I]

Haha I have driven around that island 500 times and I ran aground twice in that spot while we were on vacation at the beginning of this month. Not bad but the first time we had to hop out and push the boat about 20 feet to get back in a few feet of water. Second time 2 days later I just felt like a dumbarse. Lucky it wasn’t bad either time and didn’t have to sit through a tide.
