What are you talking about..too close to you?

I know there is different opinions across this land on fishing Etiquette…but when I stumble upon another boat say at commanche, y73 or any other reef after traveling 20+ miles offshore…what kind of distance from the other boat is suitable as to not piss someone off…and if he is pissed off, and you feel like you are being courteous on the proper distance…Well, than he will just have to be pissed off.
I know, some are jerks and it wouldn’t matter if you were 6 miles from them…but for me, I would like to know that I was not too close to someone and doing the right thing. Anyone ever run into this???

If you are fishing an artificial reef, there are multiple pieces of structure, do not anchor on the same structure someone is anchored on. If you were driving to a piece of live bottom and see another bote on the spot you intended to fish, go somewhere else don’t be a dick. I have driven 60 miles and 3 miles away from the number spot someone sitting where I want to fish. I plug-in a new number and go somewhere else. I don’t crowd people, and expect the same. Now granted there are times that I have multiple friends out there and we all fish on the same piece of live bottom and we have a great time.

Never had much of a problem with anyone setting up close on an offshore reef other than inexperienced boaters trying to anchor up and getting all out of control. Personally I don’t like to fish even a little close to anyone else, if I can’t give 50 yards offshore I’ll move on. When I used to go offshore a lot, we always had several areas in the planned fishing trip just incase an area was crowded. Lot’s of live bottom that does better than artificial reefs … imo.

Probably my worst experience for bottom bumping was out at the Ross, and trolling in the deli. Some see a hook up and make a bee line towards you not thinking about interfering with an others trolling pattern or tight area of bottom.

I guess your question can receive a dozen different answers from a dozen people. Everything is subject to change with circumstances.

If a reef is already crowded, I’ll not stop. If you do I’d not set up closer than 30-50 yards. Ocean is just too big to crowd up on one spot. Trust me there are much better fishing spots than the commanche or y73. Just have to take some time to find them or get lucky enough for someone to give you numbers.

Edit… what sellsfish said about fishing with buddies. get one with a good anchor set and tie off on his boat(i dislike pulling an anchor) than start the betting pool for biggest, littlest, … etc fish and let the fun roll.

Sellfish…??? Thanks for the post but your information was kinda worthless. All I got out of it was “don’t be a dick”??? So… are you saying 3 miles is still too close??? That seems a bit much. I have been inshore at a nice spot and had people all over me…it (**()sure wasn’t 3 miles…lol…more like 30yrds.

Fred67…THANKS…Yes, I only used those 2 places as an example…good information. Thanks again. Jim

2 long casts inshore and 3 long casts offshore (when anchored) is what I go by. That would be about 70-80 yds. inshore and about 120 yds. offshore. That way, you are fishing far enough away to not interfere with each others hooked fish. This is ONLY when anchored. If poling a flat I give 200+ yds, drifting offshore just depends on the situation.

Thank you Raddaddy. I mean, I know there is NO exact number for this…I was just trying to get other anglers input on what they do. I never been offshore fishing, so, I didn’t want to crowd or break a “fishing rule”…lol.

Im guessing sellsfish was saying he saw the boat 3 miles before getting there and would go somewhere else… otherwise, you’d be saying essentially you wouldn’t anchor if there was a boat on the horizon.

Sells is right on. If you dont understand what he is saying then maybe you are the problem…

Stick to the Charleston 60 you’ll do fine

Yeah, you might be the problem after all…

May all your favorite bands stay together…

If you can talk to them, you are to close

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

I go offshore to get away from all other humans, except for the few i ask to go with me…

i stay as far away from all other boats as i can,i wish others followed the same rule…

Just like sellsfish,i have altered course to go to atotally different spot…

SAFMC you suck!

Ok…I am done, thanks for all the opinions and information…even from the ones who just wanted to come on here and show there keyboard warrior skills?? This was a simple post about asking for some experience from some guys that ran into this offshore…that’s it. If you read…2 of you made it personal, I can care less about your input and PLEASE PLEASE feel free not to help me in any other of my posts…I am sure I will be ok without your input. There are at a minimum 20 different pieces of structure scattered over a large area at every one of those artificial reefs. If I get there and there is a boat fishing any one of those, I’m going to pick another one. There is no need to crowd around another boat because he’s pulling in 6" sea bass over the rail every minute. You can do that over the next unoccupied piece of structure…
