The summer pattern is almost here

If it wasn’t so windy I would say its here. But, when the wind is blowing 15 to 20 - and you’ve got a loop in your line that requires you to reel five times before you set the hook, then you catch maybe a fifth of the fish that bite. (not counting pin fish. We all know you only catch one out of a hundred of those annoying bites)

Adam and I fished pretty hard last week under these conditions and, although we got bit pretty regular, we only caught a handful of fish.

We were using artificials. I usually start out fishing with whatever I have on my line from my last trip. So, I was throwing a z man 3 inch swim bait. Anything purple is working right now. Especially for flounder. I am out of purple death and mood ring but had a pack of dark and stormy.

Adam is a bit more analytical and almost always ties on something different to make sure we find what works for that outing.

I fished Monday and Tuesday with my brother and his wife from Kansas City and again, lots of wind but trout and flounder are staging on the banks lined with oysters.

The trick is to try to get caught on an oyster so that you’ve got a chance to reel that loop out of your line before you pop off. About when the soft plastic drifts out of the oysters, anticipate a bite. I’m guessing 90% of the bite comes then.

If you watch my videos you know that Adam destroyed me last winter with that Ned Rig. In fact, five times in a row he outfished me. Well, “Times They are a Changin’”

As always the video is at the top for those interested. The first twelve seconds is pretty cool. We had a pair of dolphins zip by us in a small creek. I’ve had that happen a few times and I’m always amazed at how fast they are and how much water they disperse.
