Big 6pt

I’ve been watching this guy, along with a few others, this season and he finally slipped up Saturday morning. I got a late start walking to the stand and could barely make out a big blob through the binoculars. Instead of continuing on to the stand, I quietly slipped to the side of the woods and waited a few minutes until more light came. As it got easier to see, I could clearly see a big body deer with a smaller body deer behind him. Squeezed off the trigger and that was it. I couldn’t tell from the pictures, but this guy had no G1s at all, not even bumps, but I’m certainly proud of him. He’s the heaviest deer I’ve killed by a good 20 lbs. Plenty of meat in the freezer now.

Still trying for one more if he messes up, but I’m happy about this one.

Congrats.

Great deer. I shot a 5 point that I thought was a 10 because he had a wierd rack 3 huge points on one side and 2 smaller ones on right side. Looking at him broadside I thought all 5 were on same side. And, believe it or not, he weighed 169#

Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.

The heaviest deer I’ve ever shot on my property was 180# and he was a 6 pt

I’ve got this other buck I’ve been watching with a much nicer rack, but I’m betting he’s 145ish. Its interesting to see the differences in body size vs antlers. I’m sure if I saw him, I would have pulled the trigger, but for now, it looks like he’s going to make it to next season.

Camera batteries were starting to die quickly with the cold. He’ll be a great buck next season if he makes it.

I used to be able to judge the weight on a cow or hog pretty close, but even laying dead up close I will still miss a deer’s weight. I find it pretty cool that we are seeing some 170+ # deer being taking regular. Growing up If you got a buck over 140-150# in the low country you had a big deer. Better food, QDMA and others following like practices, Culling out crap bucks, maybe the swap from many large plantation owners to the preference for bird hunting, The massive amounts of corn and other feed people put out for deer, Rural areas becoming more populated making it harder for Illegal night hunting and the addition of cameras every step you turn, or maybe the simple fact we do not have the amount of farmers looking to eradicate All deer?? Lot’s of factors, probably the combination of all, IMO.

Either way, if you are looking for a wall hanger or just meat to put in the freezer our state has a lot to offer. I actually got involved with a large Plantation under new management that doesn’t care for birds, but is managing it’s forest for Deer! Really opening up the pines around any standing hardwoods and then planting more hardwoods over pine with multiple large food plots. Cool thing about it is it is bordered by other large plantations and no hunting pressure for a long way. They seem to want to rival Southern Rail Road in Dorchester. Only they are just focusing on deer.

On a side note, SR started trapping and killing armadillos. In a 3 month time span over a test area they eradicated 480. I’ve only killed 14 this year. Wife just said my break was over… Back to flooring.

I kill every armadillo I see!

My deer get fed, but nothing crazy. Food plots in the ground twice a year, plus corn during hunting season. Neighboring property 200 acres used to rotate peanuts, cotton, and soy, but lately it has just been watermelons. They’ll eat the leaves early on, but once its established, they stay out of the patch. I’m thinking about increasing my plot sizes this year.

Very nice. I have a decent 6 point with a harem that frequents my yard at night. I occasionally catch him on my security cameras. If my suppressor would just come in…

"Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It's Hand", but really, who cares?

Old boy is lucky! I’ve seen deer do some serious damage on watermelons when they get ripe. Raccoons too. Believe it or not in a dry season coyotes may be the worst enemy of a watermelon field other than Wild hogs and deer.

Between my pond and the neighbor’s irrigation pond, there’s no shortage of water around. I’ve heard that a deer will smash a watermelon to eat it, but I haven’t seen it happen. Maybe its the type of melon they are growing? They grow the smaller seedless ones and harvest quicker than I would.

I’ve grown crimson red for the past couple of years and the deer only seem interested in the early growth. If they can survive the early rush of the deer, they do fine. Also never had a deer mess with my pumpkins. We do have coyotes here and there, but not large numbers so it seems. Never seen a hog, thank the Good Lord.

Neighbor pulled in the yard yesterday, We have had this 10 pt on camera for awhile. Only at night, guess he started thinking about cooter and got stupid. He was taken at 0930. I thought from cam pic he would have been heavier, weighed in at 158#. Waiting for someone to get the big 14 point we have on camera. I’m gonna guess 190#+?

I still want to get one over 200#. Maybe one day. Might have to get up around Bamberg to do it.
