Murray topwater bite....

Does Murray get a consistently good topwater striper bite? If so approx. when does it occur and does it last through winter? I have to imagine with cooling temps they would start to show on top. Most of the reports I have read show guys still trolling. As I have recently relocated to the area from the Chesapeake Bay area in MD I would like to get on the water for topwater light tackle striper fix. Any info is apreciated.

Thanks…

reelfly let the temp cool down a bit more.the stripers will start schooling.you can also watch the birds they will show you where the fish are.i thinking the end of october, maybe sooner the fish are the only ones that know for sure.keep up with the posts.how long have you been here?

Rumor has it there has been some surface activity in the early morning. I have not seen it since I am boatless, but I heard about it. What happened to your boat sharkey?

the motor developed a knock in it after sitting up all summer.you know i don’t start fishing until the river roaches(jet skis) go back to hiding.i still have the little 12ft with a 25 suz.i put a 75hp merc on the 16ftr after the other started acting up.the merc just needs a good tune up.hope to have it next week.what about your boat what is the problem?i may know where one is to your liking.18ft walk thru with an imboard.1000$ it’s worth it i just don’t need it.i got the 12ftr,16ftr a pontoon and my ocean boat.i gotta get me a trailer for the pontoon.then we can get together and catch some fishes.if you don’t mind fishing my end of the lake.

I need to take off the outdrive and see what happened. But I did find a matching outdrive for $300 OBO. It is the upper and lower. he also has the motor for $100. If I were not in a rented townhouse and had somewhere to put it I would buy both. Just want to take it apart and make sure it’s not something simple. You never know.

As far as fishing your end of the lake, I like it better. Fish just are not there now. Got a gps now so I will be able to find my way back to SCE&G #3 at night this year. Gets tricky up on that end, everything looks the same if you don’t know it well.

REELFLYi’m waiting on them to head this way.i bought new line now i just got to take the time to respool them.i got some lead poured.it’s just a matter of time and soon i hope.once you make the trip from the forks of the river and back to 3 a couple of timesit’s nothing to it.i want to put you on some big perch this year.some of them are a pound.there are alot of newbies going to be on the water this year.i hope they don’t mind fish close and have patience.they seem like a bunch of great guys.i might have to charge to take them out this year.:smiley:if i can help with your boat let me know.you can bring it over to my house and work on it if need be.it wouldn’t be a problem to leave it a couple of days either.one of my fishing partners is a decent boat mechanic.if he can stay out of the woods long enough.i hope them little kittys are holding in the same spot this winter.WHAT HAPPENED TO REELFLY?

I guess we kind of hijacked his thread. Thanks for offering help. If I have too much trouble I may take you up on the offer.

ReelFly,
It seems like the fish school on top mostly from October thru December. Might be longer, can’t quite remember. Last year was my first winter on Murray.

reelfly i apologize for hi-jacking your thread.i will let you know when the fish start hitting top water around shulls island.there is a flat that holds fish. i will put you on some.steely let me know if you need any help.

Sharky- Thanks for the info, I moved down last December and did not get a chance to fish last year as a result of the move. I am looking forward to fishing on Murray. My father retired to Chapin, and I am in NC just across the border.

SteelyTom- Thanks for the info and no worries on the hijack, I had read the death of sharky thread earlier… Sharky bummer on the motor.

Small ones are beginning to do a little schooling on top now, but are only staying up for a very, very short time and are hardly worth the effort and time it takes to target them. As the water cools, it should get much better.

Whaler Driver,

Thanks for the input, I will wait a few weeks. I will start exploring probably the second week in October.

reelfly the topwater bite was awesome for about 4 days down at the dam
i pulled limits on saturday and sunday. i fished yesterday and the topwater bite was slow cathing only one on top. the fishing however is good on freelines using lake worlds monster bluebacks. the topwater bite will pick up with cooler weather.

DJ, where ya been?

We got into stripers on the surface Sunday morning. It was a sunny day and, once the sun was a little higher in the sky, we didn’t see anything else on top. After that, everything was down about 12 to 30 feet.

Sounds like we are getting closer to a steady topwater bite. I think I will start out this weekend and continue fishing through winter. Thanks for the update.

Got into stripers on the surface near Spence Islands this AM. Did well throwing plastic swim baits and Sammys until two slack jaws in a bass boat ran right through the school and put them down.
