Ford sells lines to Tata Motors

Ford sells Jaguar and Land Rover lines to Indian owned Tata Motors for $2.3 billion. I think this is a good move for Ford, but will absolutely kill the Jaguar and Land Rover image here in the US. Tata is an up and comer, but they will have a major uphill battle proving they can run them (quality and production wise). Wonder what Tommy Baker thinks about this???

I bet most Jag and Rover owners did not know they were buying a Ford product.

I bet most people thought both were German.

mmmmmmmm, I dunno greg1. maybe it is just my knowledge or those I have spoken with about it, but I think most understand Ford’s role in those lines. wonder if most know Volvo is also a Ford product?

I don’t think Tata will kill the Jag and Rover image, but I understand your point.
People in the auto industry have respected Tata for a long time. They’ve made the news (bad news in my opinion) about the $2500 peoples car. They promised it a few years ago and delivered, but it’s a mistake in the US to be associated with the cheapest car in the world. A lot of us still remember the Yugo.
As for production, both lines are low volume compared to business Tata has been doing for years.
Quality. Jag didn’t make a car that didn’t leak until after Ford owned them. I love the cars, especially old E types, but quality wasn’t really their strong suit.

Both are British, not German

So much water, So little time

I’m glad Ford is getting rid of Jag and Land Rover. Alot of money for alittle return. Neither one are very good sellers. I wonder if Ford will still be using Jag engines etc. in the Lincolns?

Don’t be surprised if the Lincoln nameplate just goes away in the next couple of years as Ford continues to consolidate. The Big 3 all have to make drastic changes to survive and compete. Plymouth is gone, Oldsmobile is gone, I believe there are more on the horizon.

Are the people you’re speaking with investors or the women who have their husbands buy them those cars?

Because I can assure you with almost 95% certainty that the dozen or so MILFs that work out at my gym who drive Jags and Rovers do not know that those are Ford products.

If they did know, they proably would’ve asked for Mercedes instead.

which gym are you working out at? I’m at Gold’s on Folly Rd…not many jags and rovers there :stuck_out_tongue:
I see your point. don’t know anybody who has a jag or rover now. the peeps I have talked with were just buddies. I had a LR3 2 years ago and that was the worst single vehicular decision I have EVER made, BUT it was not related to it being a Ford product at all.
Interesting Ford was down 2% today and Tata was down over 6%…go figure! guess Ford investors didn’t like the fact that Ford sold those units for half of what they paid! OUCHIE!

I remember in the early 90’s when Jags were known to “live in the shop”, yet uptown moms still drove the @#@# out of them.

It’s amazing what brand and image can do.

But honestly, I have no idea what affect any of this will have on Ford. I don’t see how it can hurt.

Hell, isn’t the F-150 the best selling truck like 15 years in a row now? And the stock has been falling the whole time.

Oh…I an I work out in Mt. Pleasant. Often times during regular business hours.

There’s only 3 kinds of people at the gym at 10 am. Salesmen, Firemen, and Trophy Wives.

hmmm, lemme guess which one you are!

F-150 is the best selling truck forever and I agree, why is Ford’s stock price still so depressed? I bet with the selling of these 2 lines Ford regroups and the stock price doubles within a year.

A

stickman

A man goes into an auto parts store and says to the man behind the counter, " I’d like 4 spark plugs for my Yugo". The counter man thinks about the request for a minute and replies, “yes, that’s a fair trade”.

Remember the bankers that sold Jag to Ford still got their 0.5%, and get it again with the next sale. There’s a message there.

Yes F150 has been the best selling truck for 32 years but Fords problem is they put all there eggs in Explorer, Expedition and trucks, there is no small good gas mileage cars except Focus and Fuson. Big cars and SUV sales are way down. Ford needs more small 30 mpg cars to choose from. In 2009 or 2010 there is suppose to be diesels options in F150’s and Explorer great, but the cost to buy one is $40,000 or more. Sell a $18,000 car that gets 30 + mpg and looks good or let the Japs take completely over the car market.

It’s too bad the Yugo didn’t catch on. The cars were loaded with great innovations. The one that comes quickly to mind are the heating wires embedded in the rear window that allow you to warm up your hands as you push the car down the road in cold weather.

Lol! Now that’s funny right there!

Ta Ta’s?

Really?

Get ready for the one-liners…

I’m back and I’ve promised to behave this time.
