Florida Boy lunch break saga

This is continued from the inshore reports section:

Figured I would continue my saga here as long as I was getting out atleast one time per wk and share my experience for anyone who cares. Went out alone today between 4:15 & 4:45…(this is not an easy task trying to stay in 8-12’ of water pulling 2 umbrella’s, a bucktail, & shallow rapala diver)…got to make 2 passes through the shallow banks and humps I like to troll during winter still 300 yards from my dads dock. 1st pass thought I hung and umbrella in 8’ (only had put out 23’ of line to keep them shallow), so I gunned the throttle to try and pull all lures up but it ended up being a 19-20" striper. I had a shallow 4" rapala diver start screaming right after the hookup and I thought she was hung, then she started bouncing so I just semi set the hook, kept the boat going and pulled in the striper on the umbrella, by the time I got back to the rapala the fish was gone. Made the pass back through with no luck and went back to work. it was windy and CoOoOoOld!!! Didn’t have any measuring instrument on the boat so I used my shoe. I was tempted to keep it before I knew exactly what the size was, and when I couldn’t get an exact measurement and I knew I had to go back to work, decided to let her swim.

Molly & Ginger ready to go (though they don’t look as eager today)

Molly & Ginger scouting the humps and holes to pass over

Not so glassy today

only striper…top of bait tank is about 26-28" across

Finishing up my final pass…rod on left is almost invisible!

Sun going down, the fishing gets hot soon after, but I got to go back to work!!!

Glad you got out fb - wishin I was…maybe saturday pm or sunday…tight lines and keep at em!

Advice from my father–“Son, if you have to eat a turd, don’t nibble!”

Headed out this a.m. It was raining and friggin’ COoOoOlLlLldDdDdD… Started pulling umbrella’s and stretch 25’s at the GAP. Pulled for about 5-10 minutes and got 1st pulldown on umbrella. 19" striper. pulled for another hour or so up past the amoco sign and towards acapulco and got another pulldown on one of the stretch 25’s…got it all the way in and it was a gar wrapped in the line, not even on the lure. Easy release as he fell off when he was lifted in the air…no more pulldowns after that. Started heading back as all of us were FROZEN and had had enough! We marked fish the whole time and rods were constantly bouncing as going through small fish or bait balls.

Not a good looking start

Waiting for another bite

Blake (cousin) catching the gar

Myself have had ENOUGH of the cold. Wasn’t properly dressed for the rain & wind to be included.

Run some small trailers behind your u-rigs. Triple swivells will do the trick. I usually use a small spoon with a white/chatruese(sp) feather tail on it. You will pick up small fish but also stand a chance of a larger one!

the middle lure on the umbrella is about 12" behind all the other lures…we use mainly all bucktail with chartreuse and green tails

chartruese works good on everything-I use them on a 3oz bucktail on the triple swivells with the bucktail off about a foot and the spoon trailing about a foot behind it. Different look and has snagged 2 or 3 :smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:

nice…3 oz bucktails? How deep does that put you? you’re talking about a 1 1/2 lb rig!!! We use 1/4 to 1/2 oz bucktails…Usually with 100+ ft out they dive to 25’…Rule of thumb on ours is 3 x’s the line out is the debt until you reach 25’ then it doesn’t really dive any deeper… When I troll near dads house over the points I put out 23’ of line
