More closed areas

The SAFMC is trying for more closures. They want to reconfigure the MPA’s so they cover more of the ledge out to 400’ They also are looking to close “spawning areas” … When will this ever end? ’ My guess is when the entire ocean is closed to fishing.

Keep your self informed. Make sure your comments are well thought out and recorded.

They want to close off the entire ledge. They know that they could never close it in one large proposal, so they are trying to chip away at us. It’s an easier pill to swallow…

I was suprised they changed the name from MPA to SMZ. It sounds like they are learning to slip stuff by people.

I don’t understand why they don’t want to use science for any of it.

Tuck em

The SAFMC closed grouper fishing during spawning time , and then some. So what’s the point? Why close an area that’s already covered by a seasonal closure?

I want to see the proof that speckled hind has EVER been more populated than they are now. Some species are in low numbers and it doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with fishing. Take another species like bluespotted coronetfish. How many do you typically catch? They are NEVER kept by humans and hardly caught by humans, so there is ZERO fishing pressure on them. Yet, by the way that SAFMC understands the laws of nature, there should be gazillions of them. There are not. Why not? That’s the piece that scientists should be trying to understand. A speckled hind is very similar to a rock hind. Again, very little fishing pressure on rock hinds. They have a very specific habitat that they like and are naturally limited in their abundance. I would think that the speckled hind fairs exactly the same. I’m sure that there are DOZENS of examples just like this. That is, examples of fish that have ZERO fishing pressure, yet still remain in low abundance because nature dictates it so.

But that’s not the issue. I’ve posted this MANY, MANY, MANY times. The SEDAR scientists have stated on record (in their meeting minutes) since the late 1990’s that they feel that the ONLY way that they can manage this fishery is through LARGE MPAs. They literally decided this 20+ years ago. Cupka and Waugh were there at this time, and they have made their mind up. They are the “CEO’s” of the organization and in charge of many conversations that happen behind closed doors. Their main objective for the past 20 years is, “How do we achieve this vision?”.

Someone in their group figured out an age old rule of thumb… If you throw a frog into boiling water, he will jump out, but if you turn the heat up slowly, he will just sit there and die… This is the EXACT strategy they employ today. By asking for a handful of MPA’s in each region every few years, they are slowly turning up the heat. They want to close off most of the “ledge” to bottom fishing. It’s not because they are evil fishermen haters. It’s because their limited b

They make regulation (law) after regulation (law) and want to make more and more with out seeing the results of the regulations (laws) they recently enacted. Skinneej is correct about speckled hind and rock hind. They have never had big populations. However, Warsaw grouper are self protecting. They live at great depths and are very difficult to fish for. This is all about the tree hugger climate change vegan Obama Cupka ED crowd getting their way Also watch the horizon, VMS is in the plan!

VMS is definitely part of the plan… Here is a sneak peak into Waugh’s fisheries cookbook:

<> Q: What’s the plan? A: Turn the “ledge” into one large MPA from NC to FL.
<> Q: How to we enforce the rules? A: VMS
<> Q: How do we implement the plan? A: Create just enough MPA’s to squeeze through public tolerance. Wait until the heat simmers down, grab a few more… Wash, rinse, repeat.

Skinnee with all your knowledge and time spent on reading and discussing these issues are you honestly trying to say that there isn’t a bigger agenda here other than the decision 20 years ago to only manage the fishery by having the main area closed? I think that we would be an ignorant group of fisherman to not recognize a bigger picture of what they want. I feel its not about the science, the fish numbers, or many other things people would try and point at. It is a 20-30 year goal of government control of all resources of significant worth. A billion dollar fishery isn’t gonna be slowed for science or this/that. It will be controlled and then privately sold/leased …thus furthering the bigger picture of controlling the food, water, and population. Since the 30s/40s the government has been doing its best to control anything and everything they don’t currently have their control over. Controlling a massive area of ocean that is priceless as a food source seems completely on target with how things are going. NO, I don’t believe or trust in anything related to big government or big corporate. Its a giant mess. Please Skinnee tell me Im wrong here and there are things I am not taking into account. Honestly, I am not sure it matters. I look at life this way... There are things that are in my circle of control, and there are things that are not in my circle of control. Things that are not in my circle of control I tend to not care about. In addition, the things you speak of sound like a "conspiracy theory". Weather it's true or not, is really of no consequence. If you want to understand the world in that manner, there is nothing wrong with it, but if that is one's platform to "deliver the message" about what is wrong, then the platform is broke

SCDNR = state... SAFMC = federal...

MPA’s that are VMS regulated and fished with buying and selling of catch shares that the government controls.

“Fixing” problems that don’t exist seem to be specialty.

Hopefully a strong presence at the meetings and comments can avoid this round of the new SMZ’s.

The one thing that works best is involvement by our elected officials. I have been asked by council members not to get politicians involved. Asked may not be the correct word. I think its because the council feels it knows best

I understand the difference. I was simply saying would they treat it the same… much like the nmfs tuna permit…
